How a Small NYC Music School Competed Neighborhood by Neighborhood

In New York City, a small in-home lesson studio can't outrank every music school in Manhattan. So we stopped chasing “NYC” and built pages for the neighborhoods Norma Music actually serves.

The Challenge

A small fish in the biggest pond there is

Norma Music offers in-home and virtual piano, voice and violin lessons in New York City, with faculty trained at Juilliard and Manhattan School of Music. Great teachers, but a small studio competing against every music school, conservatory program and lesson marketplace in the city.

Searches like “violin lessons NYC” are dominated by sites with years of authority. A small studio going head to head for those terms can spend a long time on page five.

What We Did
01

Moved the site to WordPress

A full migration from Squarespace to a fast WordPress site, built so each neighborhood and instrument could have its own page and its own structured data. See our music school web design.

02

Built neighborhood hubs

Pages for Harlem, the Upper West Side, the Upper East Side and Tribeca, each with piano, violin and voice pages underneath. Places a small studio can realistically win with local SEO.

03

Gave each neighborhood its own story

Not city-name swaps. The Upper West Side page leans on Lincoln Center and conservatory culture, the Harlem page on the neighborhood's gospel and Apollo legacy, with music school schema listing the neighborhoods served.

The Result

Ranking where it can actually compete

Since the new site launched in late June 2026, the neighborhood pages have done exactly what we built them to do. The Harlem piano and violin pages have an average Google rank around 12, and the Harlem hub around 20, while the citywide violin and piano pages sit around 49 to 56. Searches like “violin lessons west harlem” and “singing lessons west harlem” now land in the top 15.

Monthly visitors from Google search tripled between July and September 2026, and 80% of the search visits that didn't land on the homepage came through a neighborhood page.

For an in-home studio, every new family matters. At a conservative 5% inquiry rate, the neighborhood pages alone point to close to one new inquiry a month, from searches the studio had no realistic shot at before. Want to see this approach in other cities? Browse the areas we serve.
